WAR CHIEF

26.5Hx11Wx16D Edition of 30

Quanah Parker was one of the fiercest warriors of the Southern Plains Indians. Calvary Captain Robert Carter a battle scarred soldier of the Indian Wars, said of him, "Quanah fought with reckless, fanatic zeal, raiding settlements across half of Texas".

Suddenly, in 1875 Quanah brought his people in and settled on the White-dominated world of a Reservation. For the first time in his life he would live in a house, eat at a table, ride in a wagon. By the time of his death in 1911 he had mastered the language of the white man well enough to work out shrewd deals for his people, becoming not only a prominent cattleman but also a major shareholder in a railroad. He had honor, fame, wealth and a 12 room show-place home for his large family. In spite of this fact he would never give up his Comanche heritage. When he was buried beside his white mother, it was in full regalia of a war chief. -Ken Payne
