NAVAJO SHEPHERD STUDY
23hX9ROUND
On the Navajo Indian Reservation
you often see small flocks of sheep. If you stop and watch awhile, you will
always spot the herder. He lives with his sheep. They are his wealth. He will
shear them without help, his wife will then take the
wool and spin it into yarn, then dye it with plants from the area and make a
famous Navajo rug on her loom. The old shepherd and the horse he rides, ain’t changed.
The old ‘Long Hair’--that’s the old ones that refuse to adapt to white man
ways, are fast vanishing from the world. Most of the hogans
are empty and the water holes are dry. Where there was grass for his flocks
there is only blowing dirt.
